Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
