The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Apex Legends Lead to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Feedback
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling the project with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Key Recruitment
The news mirrors a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.
Here is the full text from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game demo was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. Following some time of discussions, he comes aboard us on the specified date.
His leadership and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the recent years creating and managing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the progress of the game in the months to follow.
The President
Experience of the New Leader
Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that shift every session. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Or aim high, put it on the line, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."
The game does not have an official launch window or platforms, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as production progresses.
